Crafts Re-Imagined is a contemporary art exhibition that brings artists and designers into direct collaboration with Egypt’s master craftsmen, staged within one of the most significant Ottoman-era houses in Historic Cairo. Housed at Beit El Sehemy, the inaugural edition marks a new chapter in Art d’Égypte’s ongoing work of repositioning traditional Egyptian craftsmanship within a contemporary creative landscape, moving the conversation from the open street into the intimacy of a lived historic residence.

Building on the legacy of Re-Imagined Narratives (2019), which transformed Al-Muizz Street with installations set against the district’s medieval architecture, Crafts Re-Imagined narrows its focus to something more personal: the direct pairing of artist and artisan. Where the previous edition staged craft against a monumental backdrop, this one stages it as collaboration, placing woodwork and stone carving, glassblowing, traditional weaving and tapestry, and Khayamiya (tentmaker appliqué) into conversation with contemporary practice.

The exhibition treats these disciplines not as remnants of a fading past but as living, evolving practices, still capable of shaping the creative economies of today. Alongside newly co-created works produced specifically for this edition, the show gathers craftsmen and international artists whose practices have long drawn inspiration from Egyptian civilization, tracing a lineage of exchange that predates the exhibition itself.

At its foundation, Crafts Re-Imagined is an act of interconnectivity, an attempt to open new markets for artisans, strengthen the local creative economy, and place craftsmanship at the center of cultural production. It is a bid for a resilient, interconnected creative ecosystem for Egypt’s artisan communities, staged inside the very walls that have witnessed generations of Cairene craft.
