DESCRIPTION

“About 2 Inches Long” features a nasothek with a hundred sculptures of noses in various sizes and shapes. Inspired by Pascal’s aphorism, “The nose of Cleopatra: had it been shorter, the face of the entire world would have been changed,” the artist explores the impact of small changes on historical trajectories. The project examines 50 depictions of Cleopatra’s nose throughout art history, from ancient coins and sculptures to Renaissance interpretations, 19th-century orientalist fantasies, and Hollywood portrayals.

Additionally, the artist conducted workshops with children, who sculpted their own interpretations of Cleopatra’s nose based on these images. Kosmatopoulos reinterprets Pascal’s idea by examining how different perspectives on a single historical truth might alter the course of history yet to be written, offering a new dimension to the concept of historical influence and change.

Greek Epigram n.400

DESCRIPTION

A celebration of Hypatia, the great philosopher and mathematician born in Alexandria in the 4th century AD. She was renowned in her own lifetime as a great teacher and wise counselor. Palladas’s epigram No. 400 from the Greek Anthology praises her knowledge and wisdom. Planets, algorithms, geometry, and astronomy are depicted in these two papyri to venerate and remember her immense knowledge and genius. But one day, sadly, the cowardly Hypatia was brutally murdered.

Some red ink from the calligraphy descends toward Hypatia’s heart to symbolize her cruel stabbing. My love for her is not ordinary; this artwork goes beyond. Hypatia still exists in the realm of knowledge and courage, and art is worthless unless it plants beauty in people’s hearts.

After Pangea

After Pangea, Emilio Ferro’s new light art installation, will be on view from October 15 to 30, 2024, at Egypt’s Library of Alexandria as part of “Tale of Two Cities” by Art D’Égypte/Culturvator. Five towering marble blocks form a pentagonal structure representing the continents, with a glowing central platform symbolizing the sun and ancient solar deities like Ra and Helios.

The installation invites visitors to reflect on unity and peace by moving toward the light. Supported by Marmonil, After Pangea evokes the grandeur of ancient Egyptian and Greek monuments and highlights the possibility of overcoming global challenges through collective human effort.

Symbolically depicted with a lengthened neck and exaggerated hair, she embodied pride, liberation, and a blend of Egyptian and Greek cultures, reflecting her city of Alexandria.

Streets have long served as tools for social engineering, reflecting a town’s cultural, political, and religious values. They reveal what people care about, who they are, and how they wish to be perceived. In Micha’s latest works, European city streets become his focus as the artist captures a “time capsule” by creating molds in situ and later casting them in his studio, preserving all elements present at the moment of molding. Brass is occasionally referenced symbolically, representing strength, endurance, and purification. Here, we honor the streets, their resilience, and their people.

In his “Phoenix” series, Jean Boghossian explores rebirth through the symbolism of the Phoenix bird, resonant with Lebanon’s spirit of renewal, as Beirut has risen from the ashes seven times. Boghossian’s work focuses on giving books a new life, transforming burnt volumes into art. This paradox of destruction and salvation highlights the rebirth of printed words into eternal pieces of art.

In an era increasingly dominated by visual media, where words on paper are often overlooked, “Phoenix” serves as a response to this trend. Boghossian exclusively uses books from second-hand bookstores, chosen for their intricate covers and quality printing. His sculptures, crafted from these neglected volumes, honor the power of literature while breathing new life into them, preserving their significance and rescuing them from obscurity.

What Remains Of A Labyrinth

DESCRIPTION

In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth (Greek: Λαβύρινθος, labýrinthos) was an elaborate, confusing structure designed and built by the legendary artificer Daedalus for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Its purpose was to contain the Minotaur, the monster ultimately killed by the hero Theseus. A labyrinth is an ancient symbol representing wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering yet purposeful path.

The Labyrinth symbolizes a journey to our own center and back out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as tools for meditation and prayer. A labyrinth is not a maze. It has only one path to the center and back out, which is called unicursal (one line). It contains no blind alleys or dead ends, unlike mazes. The key difference between mazes and labyrinths is that labyrinths feature a single continuous path leading to the center; as long as you keep moving forward, you will eventually arrive. Mazes, on the other hand, offer multiple paths.
