Brief info
Raphaele Shirley is a French-American multimedia artist living and working in New York, with
roots in the architectural tradition of the Couëlle family and an intellectual inheritance grounded
in psychology and theories of the mind.
Working across sculpture, light, sound, video, performance, and ephemeral phenomena, her
practice encompasses autonomous works and site-specific installations, often developed in
collaboration with musicians, architects, and technical specialists.
Drawing from science, ecology, and cosmology, her work explores how the universe and human
existence have been understood and represented across time, from religious and metaphysical
traditions to contemporary scientific inquiry into quantum physics, consciousness, and the
unconscious.
Her work has been presented internationally at Kai Art Center (Estonia), Queens Museum,
Museum of the Moving Image, Hunter College, UBS Art Gallery, and Catskill Art Space (USA),
HayArt Cultural Center (Armenia), and the State Hermitage Museum (Russia), as well as at
international biennials and media festivals. Her collaborative project, The Energy+Art Garden
(TEAG), was selected for LAGI 2022 Mannheim. Raphaele has received grants from the
Norwegian Arts Council and the 2023 Wave Farm Media Arts Assistance Fund, and participated
in The Arctic Circle expeditionary residency in Svalbard, Norway, in 2009 and 2010.
